A Weekend Away

Last weekend was our special anniversary weekend in the city (no kids allowed!). We had an awesome time! It was the first time I have ever been away from Tanner over-night, but I think I did okay! I only talked about him or brought him up in conversation about 200 times -- it could have been worse! Jon kept saying ... "I know you're just missing Tanner so bad!" And the truth is, I loved having that special time with just Jon and I. I'm just USED to having my little sidekick with me everywhere I go, so it was just a little wierd being without him for so long.

Anyways, back to our weekend. We took the train into the city, which was a treat for me -- it made me feel like such an "adult." Silly, I know. Once we got there, we walked to our hotel -- The Palmer House, which has the most gorgeous lobby. I was very impressed! Then we went to lunch and walked around for a while. Jon took me to The Gleacher Center, where he will start his MBA classes next week. It was awesome and I found myself a little envious that he gets to go back to school. I always did love being in a classroom (I guess that's why I became a teacher!). It's just so fun that he's going to be LEARNING again!

After a little more walking, we returned to the hotel and got ready for WICKED!!! It was such a great show! I loved it! I read the book also, but it was completely different from the book. It was very funny. I'm not sure Jon enjoyed it as much as I did, especially since he isn't very familiar with The Wizard of Oz. I questioned him about this during the show.

R: "Have you ever seen The Wizard of Oz?"

J: "Of course ... there's the tin man, the scarecrow, Lucy ..."

R: "Lucy??"

Another conmment during the show:

J: "How did the house get from Kentucky to Oz??"

R: "Do you mean Kansas?"

I was very much looking forward to sleeping in the next morning, but couldn't stay in bed past 9:15 no matter how hard I tried to go back to sleep. Jon and I spent the rest of the morning and afternoon at Navy Pier walking around, having lunch, and seeing another show -- Cirque Shanghai -- complete with some miraculous acrobatics.

All in all it was just an amazing weekend and exactly what the doctor ordered for us -- time to just enjoy each other's wonderful company and remind each other how lucky we feel to be married to one another. Sigh ...

A picture of ourselves in the Millenium Bean in Millenium Park. Jon was trying a Fauxhauk. Feel free to give him a hard time for this. :)

Jon's new school.

So excited to see the show

On our way into Navy Pier

When we pulled into our driveway, we were met with a garage-full of new toys and baby-stuff. Our moms found a neighborhood garage sale and made out with tons of loot -- some to stay at our house and some to take home with them. The best part was when we went inside. We were greeted by the best sight ever.

You guys are back already?? How do you like my new wheels?

Faster Grammy, Faster!

Tanner was basically happier than I've ever seen him. He just thrived on all the attention and spoiling his grandmas gave him! We are so lucky they came to babysit for us!

So fortunate to get away for the weekend, sounds like you had a blast! I got to spend some quality time with your mom on Sunday. Riley, Lincoln and I got caught driving in the really bad storm they were having so we ended up in your parent's basement for a couple of hours :)! It was nice to see her again. She couldn't say enough about Tanner and how much fun she had taking care of him over the weekend.

Glad you had such a good time! I'm sure a break was just what you needed. Take care.

Oh, it sounds like a wonderful weekend!! I was lol about Jon's comments about the show. Sounds just like him. You look awesome, hot mama! Weren't you just amazed at the Cirque show? We saw the "O" show in Vegas and just loved it. It's truly incredible what they can do. I'm so glad that you and Jon had time away to be totally attentive to each other. It's so hard to even have a complete converstation when your parents. So, I know this time together was so precious.

Hi Rachel,

Your mom gave me your blog link a few months ago and I have been a lurker ever since. Your little Tanner is such a cutey! I enjoy reading about him and seeing him change over the months! I enjoyed seeing "grammie's" pics too!! Looking forward to seeing you all at Katherine's wedding. Love, Kathy Hacker
