What is the correct way to do laundry?
I know how I was taught. Separate lights and darks. Wash lights on warm, darks on cold. Wash towels on hot. But is the the RIGHT way? Yesterday, I actually read the tags on each garment I washed (probably because I was procrastinating) and I couldn't seem to find a commonality in how things are marked.
What is the method to your laundry madness?

I definitely don't know if this is the right way and I'm not even sure if it was what I was originally taught, but I do whites, lights, and darks in cold water and linens in hot water. And for clothes that say "dry clean only"...sometimes I act like the tag isn't even there!;)
I defeintely have no clue. Although, I wash my lights, darks, and whites separtely and I only partially dry and then I hang them to dry in order to preserve the life of the clothes. It takes longer this way, but I have found having 2 girls the clothes are last better- longer! :)
I wash linens and whites on hot...but everything else on cold (it's my own head thinking if I drive an SUV I need to use cold) CRAZY...but with two small kids, I also do the "dump whatever fits in" sometimes and hope I remember to actually move it from washer to dryer:) I saw whatever works!
I forgot to explain that "drive an SUV...use cold" It's my small part to keep the bills down and help the environement by not using as much electricity!
I do it the same way as you! I've never had any problems with this way. Whatever gets the job done fastest, I say ;)
I do whites on hot with bleach, lights on warm, and I do darks on warm too. White towels, bath mats, sheets etc. all on hot and separate from other laundry. Other colored towels and bath mats I do on warm. I hate the cold cycle - I know it's silly but I feel like they won't get clean if there isn't warm/hot water.
I LOVE doing laundry! It bugs me because it never ends, but it smells so good! And folding is relaxing to me... Weird, I know. :)

I dump everything together except REDS! They get washed seperate. I wash everything on warm. If I'm washing new "dark" items, I'll throw in a clorox color catchers sheet. I love them!! they pick up any dyes that may be in the water -- I don't know how it works, because it looks like a thick dryer sheet, but it works! I've never had a problem with colors bleeding onto other colors.
I say wash everything warm, as long as the colors are sorted out. I do darks (jeans and blacks), brights, and whites. I like the dark detergent they make so that black does not fade, and Oxi Clean for whites.
I HAVE learned that it really doesn't matter. I watch guys out here all the time throw everything in at a laundy mat, and they look just fine. After reading all these comments, I think everyone does it differently. :)
I close my eyes, pick up as much as I can carry, throw it in, push start and add TONS of Downy. People always comment that our clothes smell really good :). Not really, I do it just like you have been taught, but the TONS of Downy part is true.
Happy Washing!
I used to be so particular about laundry, but now the only thing that really matters in our house is that its DONE and CLEAN! Anything goes as long as we reach that outcome! :)
Great advice from everyone...
Hi Rachel,
I used to always separate my colors. A few years ago a mutual friend of ours (CP) was babysitting and loved to fold clothes while she was here each week. One day I didn't get the laundry done, and when I arrived home I realized--to my horror--that she had washed the clothes for me and mixed all colors together! Then I saw that no ill effects came of it! From then on (it's been about 4 years) I never separate colors anymore. Exceptions: new jeans or very bright colors are washed separately the first time, just in case. And if I use an older top-loading machine, I have found that colors run if I don't separate them. (I have an HE washer.)
